Golden Toad
Species: Bufo Prigleles
Classification: Amphibian Location: Costa Rica, Central America Habitat: High-altitude, cloud covered, tropical rain forest in mountains Becoming Extinct Since 1989, not a single toad has been spotted. In 1988, only 10 were seen in their habitats. There were many beliefs of what could have caused the extinction of this species. One was the deforestation of some of their habitats, also climate changes were a big affect. The sensitive moist skin that the toads had are very vulnerable to ultra violet radiation, which is why the climate change around them was a big affect. Another reason as to why they became extinct, was that they were wiped out by a type of fungus which has been killing amphibians all around the world. By 2007 this species of toad was officially extinct because none were or have been spotted. There are some ways that we could have preserved this species. One way is we could stop cutting down forests to make a profit. When we do this, many of the wildlife become homeless and have to find new homes, which could be far away. Another way we could have kept the species, is my not using so many fossil fuels. Almost everyone in the world uses these fuels on a daily basis, and they mess with the air around us, which causes many things to be out of whack, like the climate. Those are just a couple of ways we could have saved them, but it's too late. |
